Young voters come out for Barbara Lee; UCLA, UCSD, UC Berkeley Democrats latest to endorse Lee for Senate

Democratic clubs from the University of California system’s largest campuses join college students backing Lee

LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, the Bruin Democrats, the oldest and largest political organization on UCLA’s 32,000-student campus, and the UCSD College Democrats, both announced their endorsement of congresswoman and leading progressive candidate for U.S. Senate, Barbara Lee. The announcement comes on the heels of Lee’s release of her Education Policy Pillar, part of her series of policy commitments for her first term.

“California’s college students are some of our most powerful stakeholders, shaping the conversation and taking action for climate justice, economic equality, affordable education, and other critical issues,” said Congresswoman Barbara Lee. “I’m beyond proud to stand with college democrats in our spectacular UC system, and college students across our state. Together we will fight for a more just, equitable California. I will be their champion and voice in the Senate.”

The UCLA and UCSD Democratic clubs announcements closely follow the endorsement of the Cal Berkeley Democrats, securing Lee’s support from the largest California College Democrats membership, and the three largest campuses in the University of California system.

“We’re proud to endorse Barbara Lee for the U.S. Senate! Barbara Lee is a strong fighter for a Green New Deal and Medicare for All, and her unique voice against endless wars is desperately needed in the Senate,” said Cal Berkeley Democrats. “Barbara Lee’s priorities of climate action and housing justice hit close to home to us as students, and we’d be proud to have her fight for us in the U.S. Senate.”

The UC Democratic clubs join a robust slate of college and youth organizations supporting Lee’s track record of advocacy and action on issues that most concern young Californians, including the USC Trojan Democrats, and Gen Z for Change.

“From championing Medicare for All before some of our members were even born, to standing as the sole vote in Congress against President Bush’s Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq, Congresswoman Lee has been a staunch champion of progressive reformism for Californians, regardless of institutional backlash,” said Sunjay Muralitharan, College Democrats at UC San Diego Vice President. “We are confident Congresswomen Lee will continue her advocacy for a more just world as a Senator and are proud to endorse her.”

Lee’s strong and consistent progressive record aligns with youth voter sentiment, reinforced by her early and continued call for an immediate ceasefire without conditions in Gaza—the only candidate in the race to do so.
