Congresswoman Barbara Lee responds to results of New Hampshire primary, warns against a second Trump term

Lee weighs in on the threats posed by a second Trump presidency to fundamental civil rights, domestic and global security, and democratic values

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, congresswoman and leading progressive candidate for U.S. Senate Barbara Lee issued a statement reacting to Donald Trump’s win in the New Hampshire primary election, a pivotal gain in his bid to secure the GOP presidential nomination.

Lee, the lead plaintiff in the NAACP civil lawsuit against Trump for his role in inciting the January 6th Capitol attack, spoke to the dangerous implications of the increasing possibility of a second term of Donald Trump in the White House:

“Donald Trump’s win in New Hampshire all but guarantees him the Republican nomination. His continued stranglehold on the GOP makes it clear we need to elect Democrats to the U.S. Senate who won’t back down, who won’t compromise, and who won’t flip-flop their positions on important issues based on polls,” said Congresswoman Lee. “This is a fight. I have never backed down my entire life and I won’t stop now– whether it’s reclaiming our reproductive freedom, protecting workers’ rights, defending the right to vote, demanding equity for all, or calling for a ceasefire and diplomatic solutions in the Middle East. We need strong progressive leaders to take the fight to MAGA extremists and that’s what I intend to do when I get to the Senate.”

Rep. Lee’s comments closely follow the first California Senate debate, where Lee demonstrated a strong commitment to defending democratic and humanitarian values, delivering a sharp critique of Republican candidate Steve Garvey for voting for Trump’s “agenda to dismantle our democracy,” reiterating her support for an immediate ceasefire and end to civilian suffering in Gaza, and emphasizing her career-long fight for universal healthcare.
