More than 100,000 Our Revolution activists join town hall as group endorses Barbara Lee for Senate

CALIFORNIA – More than 100,000 people participated in a virtual town hall Tuesday evening as Our Revolution, the largest grassroots-funded progressive political organization in the country, endorsed Congresswoman Barbara Lee for U.S. Senate.

“Barbara Lee has the most progressive record in the House of Representatives and she’s been one of the most effective progressives ever in Congress,” said Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of Our Revolution. “Our Revolution organizers have talked to our members across California and the country, and it’s clear Barbara Lee is the movement candidate in this race. From her time as a social worker and organizer with the Black Panthers to her standalone vote against the War in Afghanistan and her success in passing 28 bills in Congress, she has always been in the trenches with the people, and we need her in the trenches in the U.S. Senate.”

Our Revolution made the critical endorsement alongside key progressive champions from across the country, including United States Representatives Ro Khanna, Ayanna Pressley, Cori Bush, Mark Pocan, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, who laid out Congresswoman Lee’s clear track record delivering progressive change for the American people.

“Our Revolution has empowered people in every corner of this country to stand up against corporate greed and restore government to its core function: public service,” said Congresswoman Lee. “We’ve shown the world what grassroots power looks like by organizing from the ground up and electing progressive champions that are changing the face of politics as we know it. Our Revolution is leading on climate justice, building an economy that works for working people, and fighting back against the toxic influence of corporate greed in our politics. I am honored and inspired to have them on my side in this campaign. We are just getting started and I am eager and excited to have such strong allies with me as we march toward equality for all.”

Barbara Lee has an established track record as a champion for progressive issues, and that is why she has the most endorsements from progressive leaders. As the progressive movement continues to grow, gaining more control and power, Lee is a key leader fighting for working families and will be a champion in the U.S. Senate.

With Our Revolution’s endorsement, they will deliver their signature people-to-people organizing model that will mobilize their more than one million members in California in support of Congresswoman Lee through a massive voter turnout effort.

Our Revolution’s support comes at a key time in the Lee campaign, which is building significant momentum as voters start paying attention to the race. Earlier this week, Lee announced the endorsement of Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara – the sixth of California’s eight statewide executive officers to support her campaign, a clear signal of both Lee’s broad support and deep ties and relationships with key decision-makers needed to get things done for Californians. Lara joined Attorney General Rob Bonta, Treasurer Fiona Ma, Controller Malia Cohen, Secretary of State Shirley Weber, and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in asking voters to support Congresswoman Lee.

Other national and California endorsers of Lee’s campaign include Congressmembers Jamaal Bowman, Sheila Jackson Lee, Steven Horsford, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Troy Carter, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Nikema Williams, Jim Clyburn, Bennie Thompson, Lucy McBath, Terri Sewell, and Gregory Meeks, former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Cedric Richmond, former Georgia General Assembly House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, State Senators Susan Talamantes Eggman, Anna Caballero and Nancy Skinner, Assemblymembers Isaac Bryan, Mia Bonta and Corey Jackson, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran, Redlands Mayor Eddie Tejeda, Rialto Mayor Deborah Robertson, former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Palm Desert Mayor Pro Tem Karina Quintanilla, Dolores Huerta, California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Chair Deepa Sharma, California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus Chair Emeritus Amar Shergill, California Democratic Party LGBTQ Caucus Co-Chair Emeritus Tiffany Woods. Lee also has the backing of the Working Families Party, Gen Z for Change, Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council, California Legislative Black Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, Feminist Majority PAC, Black Women Organized for Political Action PAC, Higher Heights for America, and a series of young-Democratic organizations, including the San Diego County Young Democrats, East Bay Young Democrats, and Latine Young Democrats of the East Bay.

There are currently no Black women serving in the U.S. Senate. Since 1789, when the first Congress met, only two African-American women have been in the Senate, serving a total of 10 years.
