L.A. Councilwoman Heather Hutt endorses Congresswoman Barbara Lee for U.S. Senate

Hutt becomes the latest elected official from Los Angeles to join Lee’s long list of supporters

OAKLAND, CA — Today, Congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Lee announced the endorsement of LA City Councilwoman Heather Hutt.

Hutt represents LA City Council District 10 where she is making history as the first woman and the first Black woman to be appointed as a voting member for the district. Hutt was the first African American woman to serve as a chief of staff for the district since 1973. From 2017-2020, Hutt served as Regional Deputy Director and then as a California State Director for then-Senator Kamala Harris where she was the first Black U.S. Senate State Director in California’s history, and was previously the District Director for Isadore Hall III in both the Assembly and Senate.

“Congresswoman Barbara Lee knows how to get the job done,” said Hutt. “From working to end poverty to fighting for workers to expanding health care, her tremendous legislative record speaks for itself. She has broken barriers her entire life, and her voice as a Black woman will bring a much-needed perspective to the U.S. Senate. I am proud to endorse her for U.S. Senate.”

“Councilwoman Hutt has fought consistently for California’s workers and working families and I’m honored to be endorsed by her,” said Lee. “I’m running for U.S. Senate because we need leaders who know how to deliver on Day One so we can take on and solve the challenges facing working families in California and across the country. In the Senate, I’ll use my experience and record of results to pass a childcare tax credit, make housing more affordable, and fight MAGA extremists’ voter suppression efforts that undermine our democracy.”

In addition to Hutt, Lee has garnered the support of prominent Los Angeles elected officials, including Mayor Karen Bass, Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove, former Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, Assemblymembers  Isaac Bryan and Mike Gipson, and former LA City Councilmember Mike Bonin.

Lee’s campaign for U.S. Senate continues to build a long and growing list of supporters, including Attorney General Rob Bonta, Treasurer Fiona Ma, Controller Malia Cohen, Secretary of State Shirley Weber, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, Congressmembers Mark Pocan, Pramila Jayapal, Ilhan Omar, Ro Khanna, Jamaal Bowman, Sheila Jackson Lee, Steven Horsford, Bonnie Watson Coleman, Troy Carter, Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Nikema Williams, Jim Clyburn, Bennie Thompson, Lucy McBath, Terri Sewell, and Gregory Meeks, former Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Cedric Richmond, former Georgia General Assembly House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams, State Senators Susan Talamantes Eggman, Anna Caballero and Nancy Skinner, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta and Corey Jackson, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran, Redlands Mayor Eddie Tejeda, Rialto Mayor Deborah Robertson, former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Palm Desert Mayor Pro Tem Karina Quintanilla, Dolores Huerta, California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Chair Deepa Sharma, California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus Chair Emeritus Amar Shergill, California Democratic Party LGBTQ Caucus Co-Chair Emeritus Tiffany Woods.

Lee also has the backing of the Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council, California Legislative Black Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, Feminist Majority PAC, Black Women Organized for Political Action PAC, and Higher Heights for America.

There are currently no Black women serving in the U.S. Senate. Since 1789, when the first Congress met, only two African American women have been in the Senate, serving a total of 10 years.
