Congressman Ro Khanna endorses Congresswoman Barbara Lee for U.S. Senate

The progressive congressman becomes the latest high-profile endorser to publicly support Rep. Lee’s history-making campaign for Senate

Los Angeles, CA – Today, Congresswoman and U.S. Senate candidate Barbara Lee announced she has been endorsed by Congressman Ro Khanna.

Khanna, whose district includes San Francisco Bay Area’s South and East Bay, has been a strong progressive voice in Congress since taking office in 2016. Khanna, who is Deputy Whip of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and was co-chair of Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, has been instrumental in pushing forward progressive legislation, including introducing bills to establish Medicare for all, set term limits for Supreme Court Justices, and get money out of politics. A leader on climate, he spearheaded the testimony of six major fossil fuel company CEOs before Congress about climate disinformation for the first time in history as chair of the House Oversight Subcommittee on the Environment.

“I am excited and proud to endorse my good friend Barbara Lee for U.S. Senate. Barbara is the progressive leader Californians need right now, and her solid record as one of Congress’ most outspoken champions of justice speaks for itself,” said Khanna. “I know Barbara will not only fight for, but will deliver on our progressive priorities that are long overdue like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and ending the filibuster. There’s a reason she’s beloved by Gen Z. Because Barbara understands the issues facing young people today and knows it is our responsibility to protect our rights, our democracy, and the planet for the next generation. What’s more, I believe that representation matters. And for far too long, our country’s institutions have failed to reflect that reality. Black women are the core of the Democratic Party, yet there isn’t a single Black woman currently serving in the Senate. We can finally change that.”

“I’m so honored to be endorsed by Congressman Khanna,” said Lee. “In the Senate, I promise to always stand up for our progressive values and be a voice for the voiceless, so we all have a seat at the table and, together, can deliver real change.  I’ve been doing this my entire career and I’ll keep doing it in the Senate. I look forward to working with the Congressman and my Democratic colleagues to move California and our country forward.”

Lee enters the race for U.S. Senate with a long and growing list of supporters, including Attorney General Rob Bonta, Controller Malia Cohen, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond, State Senators Anna Caballero and Nancy Skinner, Assemblymembers Mia Bonta and Corey Jackson, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran, Redlands Mayor Eddie Tejeda, Rialto Mayor Deborah Robertson, former Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, Palm Desert Mayor Pro Tem Karina Quintanilla, Dolores Huerta, California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus Chair Deepa Sharma, and California Democratic Party Progressive Caucus Chair Amar Shergill, California Democratic Party LGBTQ Caucus Co-Chair Tiffany Woods, Alameda County Building and Construction Trades Council, California Legislative Black Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus PAC, and Feminist Majority PAC.
